Ulticon Helps Build Lumad Bakery

Ulticon Builders Incorporated, a Quadruple A General Contractor in the Philippines, led by the President Mr. Carlos “Charlie” Gonzalez of Davao City, shares a parallel advocacy with our Philippine government: To give social and economic opportunities for our fellow marginalized brothers and sisters in the community. In line with this advocacy, Ulticon envisions to provide a practical way to acknowledge and fulfill the rights as well as provide respectable jobs and livelihoods of the Indigenous People (IP) of our community.

The indigenous people of Minalwang, Claveria- a town in Misamis Oriental, have undergone special technical education and skills training initiated by the 58th Philippine Military Infantry Battalion. This project is a collaboration of effort from both non-government and government organizations. On December seventh, twenty-five lumads (IPs) had undergone their baking training where they received personal tool kits for baking, an allowance for the duration of the training, and a National Certificate II for their skills acquired. Among those who benefited from the program were the wives of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) stationed in the said village.

The military said, “The skills that they learned and acquired through the training will open a new window for several job opportunities that will help them uplift their economic living within a poverty-stricken community.”

Aside from the skills training project, Ulticon, along with other organizations including the Philippine government, have also collaborated on the construction of a bakeshop establishment for the indigenous people that is set to finish on the 2nd of February 2020. The project was made possible through the cooperation of various stakeholders from Ulticon Builders Incorporated, Technical Education Skills Development Authority (Tesda), Global Polytechnic Institute, Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), LGU of Claveria and Minalwang Hindangon Tribal Cooperative.

Ulticon embraces these kinds of projects to help uplift our nation together as one. According to 58 Infantry Battalion commander Roy Anthony Derilo, “I am happy that the IP community of Barangay Minalwang seeks to develop their lives by participating in this livelihood and entrepreneurship opportunity. The NPA was just full of empty promises and lies (in order) to organize their community, but it is our government that will really help the community in bringing them peace and development which they long seek to enjoy.”

A common trait among Filipinos, also known as “Bayanihan” is to spontaneously extend a generous helping hand to whoever is in need within the community. Indeed, the spirit of generosity and compassion among the organizations and fellow volunteers from the livelihood project has opened up new horizons and windows and of opportunities for the lumads of Minalwang.
