UBI Advocates for Lung Health in the Workplace

At Ulticon Builders Inc., we believe that safety means more than wearing protective gear or following jobsite protocols. It also means creating a workplace where health is protected, promoted, and prioritized every day.

As part of our ongoing UBI health and safety efforts, we recently held a workplace awareness symposium focused on respiratory health, especially the prevention of tuberculosis (TB). This initiative supports DOLE Department Order 73-05, Series of 2005, which provides guidelines for controlling and preventing TB in the workplace.

But more than compliance, this activity reflects our company’s deep commitment to caring for our people.

Guided by People-First Leadership

Our President and Chairman, Carlos “Charlie” Gonzalez of Ulticon, has long championed programs that protect our workforce—not just in physical safety, but also in health and well-being. Under his leadership, we continue to invest in education and care as part of our everyday culture.

At UBI, we believe that a healthy team is the foundation of a productive and empowered workplace.

A Closer Look at the Event

The symposium was held on January 19, 2024, at the Main Conference Room of the UBI Main Office. To follow health protocols, only 2 to 3 representatives per department attended the session.

The event was made possible through our partnership with the Davao City Health Office – Davao Chest Center, represented by Dr. Nikita Marie Jamiana-Reyes and Mr. John Tinio, RN.

What Was Discussed

The session opened with registration and a prayer led by Ms. Annaliza Bacus, RN, followed by welcome remarks and speaker introduction by Ms. Jovelyn Russel from our HR Department.

Dr. Reyes began by discussing how to keep our lungs healthy through:

  • Nutritious food
  • Enough rest
  • Avoiding smoking and alcohol
  • Strengthening the immune system

She also explained the causes, signs, and symptoms of tuberculosis and gave practical advice on how to recognize and manage it early.

Mr. Tinio introduced the DOTS Program (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course), a government program that offers free diagnosis and treatment for TB at the Davao Chest Center.

Interactive and Impactful

An open forum gave participants the chance to ask questions and share insights. After the session, workers were also given the opportunity for on-site consultations with Dr. Reyes and Mr. Tinio, supported by our UBI OSH Team.

Key Takeaways

The discussion emphasized that TB is preventable—and that early action makes all the difference. Everyone was reminded of the value of:

  • Getting enough rest
  • Avoiding tobacco and alcohol
  • Eating well
  • Seeking early consultation when symptoms appear

These simple habits can protect not only individual workers but also their families and teammates.

Moving Forward with Awareness

At Ulticon, we believe that awareness is protection. Programs like these are part of our continuing mission to create a safe, informed, and empowered workplace.

Health and safety don’t just happen on the construction site—they happen in how we live and care for one another, every day.

Through UBI health and safety, we’ll continue to provide the knowledge and tools our people need to live better, work better, and stay well.
